Lead and top rope

Lead and top rope share the same core job: set up categories and routes, make sure judges score the right athlete in the right order, then review results before publishing. This page covers the lead-specific flow.

Set up the lead competition

Create a lead competition from the admin dashboard. Add your categories and assign a cutline to each — this number dictates exactly how many athletes advance from qualification to the final. Lead requires a fixed route structure per round. Qualifiers always use route1 and route2. The final uses a single final route. Set the judge passcode here so judges can access the scoring station without admin credentials.

Route consistency

Do not change route assignments after import. GripRank expects exactly two routes for qualification and one for the final.

Judging by height / hold

Lead scoring is objective: athletes are ranked by the highest hold they controlled. GripRank records a holdNumber and a plus status (controlled vs. attempted). A top outranks every other hold.

Hold Number

The highest hold the athlete controlled. GripRank converts this to a rank using holdNumber × 2 + (plus ? 1 : 0).

Plus vs Clean

A tied hold is broken by the plus indicator. Plus always ranks higher than clean at the same height.

Top

Controls the final hold. Ranks above every other hold, plus or clean.

On the judge page, select the round, then the route, then the athlete. Enter the hold number and toggle plus or clean. Submit the score.

Athlete order

Confirm the climbing order before the first athlete steps up. Judges score in the order they enter — mismatches here cascade through the leaderboard.

Rounds and advancing

Lead competitions run two rounds: qualification and final. Qualifiers use two routes per category. The final uses one route.

1Review the chief view to confirm all judges have submitted scores for every athlete in the qualifier.
2Check for missing entries or tied ranks that need head-judge verification.
3Click Advance to finals on the chief page. This calls the advance-round endpoint and marks the category's currentRound as final.
4GripRank auto-publishes the final startlist based on the qualifier cutline.

Missing entries

The advance button returns a 400 error if qualification entries are incomplete. Fix the gaps on the judge page before proceeding.

Lead chief

Results, scorecards, and exports

Navigate to the category results page to verify the final leaderboard. GripRank ranks qualifiers by combined route rank — sum of each athlete's rank on route1 and route2. Tied totals are broken by combined tops then names.

Scorecards

Use the scorecards view to print or save as PDF — the page opens the browser's print dialog. Export CSV or JSON data for external federation reporting.

Refresh the results page before publishing. Confirm the top athletes match the head judge's verbal confirmation. Once published, the final startlist and results are locked.
